Yesterday, on the 66th anniversary of the Moulin Rouge Agreement, Nevada conservatives came together at the historic Harrison House in Las Vegas for a nearly three-hour event that thoughtfully reflected on one of the Silver State’s most important civil rights milestones. Co-sponsored by the Clark County Republican Party, the commemoration brought together leaders from the Nevada Governor’s Office, Sonny Vinuya, Lt. Governor Stavros Anthony, CCRP Chairman Jill Douglass, Vice Chairman Devin Livziey, Republican candidates, and community members. Hosted by Katie Duncan with coordination by Rashuan Baldeo, the gathering stood as a powerful reminder that real progress in America has often come through local leadership, good-faith negotiation, and a shared commitment to the God-given dignity of every individual.

Speakers from the State of Nevada delivered candid remarks, urging attendees to never forget the painful days when Black Americans were barred from staying in Las Vegas Strip hotels — even as they dazzled audiences with their extraordinary talents on stage. Entertainers like the legendary Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, and Pearl Bailey performed for packed crowds at the glittering resorts but were forced to seek lodging elsewhere after the curtain fell. The Harrison House itself served as that vital refuge — a place where these icons and countless other Black performers could rest with dignity during the era of segregation. This modest but proud landmark on the city’s Westside became a symbol of resilience, hospitality, and quiet strength for a community that contributed so much to Las Vegas’s rise as the Entertainment Capital of the World.

The Moulin Rouge Agreement, signed on March 26, 1960, at the city’s first integrated casino-hotel, marked a turning point. Casino owners, government officials, and Black community leaders sat down together and forged a practical accord that opened the doors of Strip hotels, casinos, and showrooms to all patrons. It was not imposed by distant federal bureaucrats or fueled by destructive protests — it was a Nevada-made solution rooted in common sense, mutual respect, and recognition that exclusion hurt both people and prosperity. That spirit of local problem-solving echoes the conservative principles we hold dear: individual liberty, personal responsibility, equal justice under the law, and the belief that America’s greatness stems from treating every citizen as an image-bearer of God with inherent worth.
For faith-based, pro-family, pro-life, and pro-America Nevadans, this history carries a clear lesson. The injustices of the past were real, yet they were overcome not by tearing down institutions or sowing division, but by upholding timeless virtues — hard work, moral courage, and a commitment to one nation under God. Today, as radical voices push identity politics and grievance culture that pit Americans against one another, events like this at the Harrison House remind us why conservatives must continue championing color-blind opportunity, strong families, and constitutional governance. Lt. Governor Anthony and other Republican leaders standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the community sent a strong message: Nevada’s future will be built on unity through shared values, not division by race.

The Harrison House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and once a Green Book sanctuary for Black entertainers, provided the perfect backdrop for this reflective gathering. As speakers recounted the era when talent was welcomed on stage but dignity was denied off it, the audience was called to remember the past honestly while pressing forward with hope. America remains the world’s last best hope precisely because we learn from history, reject bitterness, and strive daily to form a more perfect union.
Nevada Republicans are proud to honor this milestone. Let us carry forward the spirit of March 26, 1960 — choosing dialogue over discord, opportunity over exclusion, and faith-driven character as the true path to a brighter future for every Nevadan and every American.
