Omar and Hirsi continued living together, filing joint tax returns as a couple while she remained legally wed to Elmi until their 2017 divorce. Only in 2018 did Omar and Hirsi finally formalize their marriage legally.
What makes this more than tabloid gossip? Multiple Somali community leaders and family social media posts have identified Elmi as Omar’s brother. Abdihakim Osman, a respected Minneapolis Somali leader close to Hirsi, told the Daily Mail in 2020 that Omar and Hirsi openly introduced Elmi as her brother when he arrived in the community. Osman stated the marriage was a known “scam” to secure Elmi student loans and U.S. immigration benefits. Investigative reporter Scott W. Elmi, however, surfaced later from the U.K., where other family members had received asylum. Somali naming conventions link “Nur Said Elmi” directly to Omar’s father, Nur Said.
