LAS VEGAS (TNVCNews)- In a small American town where everyday folks still value the traditions that made our country exceptional, another quiet surrender has taken place. The city council of Ravenswood, West Virginia, has agreed to stop opening its meetings with prayer after receiving a threat of legal action from the Freedom From Religion Foundation – a prominent atheist organization known for aggressively targeting any public acknowledgment of Christianity.

This latest incident follows a familiar pattern. The group, which dedicates significant resources to scrubbing references to our Judeo-Christian heritage from the public square, sends demand letters and lawsuit threats to communities across the heartland. Many smaller towns and mid-sized cities, lacking the deep pockets for prolonged court battles, choose to comply rather than risk taxpayer dollars on defense. Ravenswood is the most recent casualty in this ongoing campaign against America’s foundational faith.
For generations, opening government meetings with a simple, non-sectarian prayer has been a cherished American practice – a humble recognition that our rights come from our Creator, not from government bureaucrats in Washington. Our Founding Fathers understood this truth. They wove prayer and reliance on Divine Providence into the very fabric of our republic. From the Continental Congress to countless town halls, prayer has reminded leaders that they serve under a higher authority.
Yet today, a vocal minority of atheists insists on imposing their godless worldview on the rest of us. They cloak their intolerance in the language of the First Amendment, conveniently ignoring that the Establishment Clause was meant to prevent a national church – not to banish faith from public life. The Free Exercise Clause protects our right to live out our beliefs, including in the public square. Forcing communities to silence prayer isn’t neutrality; it’s hostility toward religion, plain and simple.
This isn’t about “freedom from religion.” It’s about freedom for religion – the very liberty that has fueled America’s moral strength, charitable spirit, and unmatched prosperity. Faith-based communities build hospitals, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and raise children with traditional values of hard work, personal responsibility, and respect for life. When we allow activist groups to erase God from civic life, we weaken the cultural foundation that keeps families strong and our nation united.
Conservative Americans, people of faith, and Constitutionalists know the stakes. Our country remains the world’s brightest beacon of hope precisely because we have honored the God who endowed us with unalienable rights. Surrendering to these demands sets a dangerous precedent. If prayer at a local council meeting is too much for the atheists to tolerate, what comes next – crosses on veterans’ memorials? Nativity scenes in town squares? The Pledge of Allegiance?
It’s time for leaders with backbone to push back. Communities should stand firm, rally legal support from pro-religious liberty organizations, and remind the courts that America was founded by believers, not by those seeking to banish faith. Our pro-life, pro-family values depend on preserving the moral framework that comes from recognizing a Creator.
Patriots, let this be a call to action. Pray for Ravenswood and every town facing similar pressure. Support organizations that defend religious liberty. Teach your children the true history of this exceptional nation. And remember: while America is not perfect, she is still the last, best hope for a world desperately in need of the light of faith and freedom.
