Washington, D.C. (TNVC News) – Chaos erupted Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner when Secret Service agents tackled a would-be assassin just feet from the ballroom doors — seconds before President Donald Trump was set to deliver remarks he had described as “some really good stuff.”

The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California — a part-time teacher and tutor honored as “Teacher of the Month” at a Los Angeles-area education center — was subdued after charging past the final magnetometer checkpoint. The dramatic takedown was captured on hotel surveillance cameras and broadcast worldwide as hundreds of reporters, Cabinet members, their spouses, and top officials dove under tables in panic.

Attendees had gathered at the Washington Hilton expecting an evening of jokes and political jabs at the nation’s 47th president. Instead, they found themselves in the middle of a security breach that could have turned deadly.
According to law enforcement, Allen was armed with a loaded shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Secret Service agents responded immediately, returning fire after shots rang out. One agent was struck in the vest but was uninjured. The entire incident unfolded in seconds, with agents in full tactical gear — some carrying automatic rifles — leaping over tables to secure the room and escort the president and First Lady to safety.

Trump and Melania Trump were seated at the head table with senior administration officials when gunfire erupted. Video from the event shows the First Lady’s sharp reaction — her gaze fixed on the doors — instantly signaling to those around her that this was no dropped tray of glasses but an active threat. The president’s detail moved swiftly, shielding the couple and rushing them from the ballroom.

Once in a secure location, the president posted on Truth Social: “I’m alright but at the urging of Secret Service have to cancel the event.” He vowed the dinner would be rescheduled within the next 30 days and declared, “I will not be intimidated by crazies out there who don’t agree or like my policies.”
This was the first time President Trump has attended the Correspondents’ Dinner since 2014. It also marks the latest in a series of threats against him, following two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign.

As of Sunday morning, Allen remains in custody. Investigators are working to answer key questions: How did he breach security at one of the most heavily protected events in Washington? What was his motive? Did he act alone, or were there accomplices? Authorities are also examining how the weapons were obtained and brought into the hotel.

No injuries were reported among guests or staff. The White House Correspondents’ Association confirmed the event was halted for safety and will be rescheduled.
TNVC News will continue to follow this developing story as more details emerge from the ongoing investigation.
