LAS VEGAS – Nothing says playoff hockey like a good old-fashioned comeback, and our Vegas Golden Knights delivered exactly that on Sunday night at T-Mobile Arena. Facing a young, hungry Utah Mammoth squad in Game 1 of the first-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series, the Knights trailed 2-1 after two periods but exploded for three third-period goals to secure a hard-fought 4-2 victory and take a 1-0 series lead.

This wasn’t just a win – it was a statement. Under head coach John Tortorella, the Knights have been a model of resilience, going 8-0-1 including the regular season. Veteran experience trumped youthful energy as Vegas leaned on championship pedigree, physical play, and timely scoring from unlikely heroes.
The Mammoth struck first in a chippy opening period, with Logan Cooley netting their franchise’s first-ever playoff goal just 11 seconds before the buzzer. Colton Sissons answered for Vegas off a gritty no-look backhand feed from Cole Smith. Utah regained the lead moments later on a deflection, but the Knights refused to fold.
The second period was all grinding defense and pressure, with no goals but plenty of momentum building for the home side. Then came the third-period surge that true fans live for.

Captain Mark Stone – now the all-time leader in Golden Knights playoff goals with 37 – tied the game at 5:33 on the power play, jamming home a rebound. Just 1:47 later, fourth-line center Nic Dowd tipped a Noah Hanifin point shot past Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka for the go-ahead tally. Ivan Barbashev iced it with an empty-netter, sending the T-Mobile crowd home happy.
Carter Hart stood tall in net with 32 saves, while the Knights’ depth shone through – the identity line of Sissons and Dowd provided the spark when it mattered most.
- Ivan Barbashev: “We got our legs under us in the first two periods, and then just kept it going.”
- Cole Smith: “What we learned today is you have to play all 60. It’s going to take every minute of every game. We just kept grinding.”

In a city built on resilience and second chances, the Golden Knights reminded us what real character looks like – never quitting, fighting for every inch, and protecting what’s ours. This veteran core, with its Stanley Cup DNA, is ready to battle for another deep run.
Game 2 is Tuesday night right back at T-Mobile Arena. Let’s pack the house, show that Nevada pride, and keep the momentum rolling for our boys in gold!
