In a stunning display of partisan blindness, Connecticut Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy revealed just how far Trump Derangement Syndrome has infected even those sworn to uphold the Constitution and defend American interests abroad.
On April 20, 2026, Murphy responded with a single, telling word — “awesome” — to a report claiming that at least 26 vessels from Iran’s notorious “shadow fleet” had slipped past a U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman area. While American forces risk their lives enforcing sanctions designed to starve the Iranian regime of oil revenue that funds Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and other terrorist groups responsible for American deaths, Murphy appeared to celebrate the evasion.

Patriotic Americans on X rightly erupted, calling out the senator for what looked like outright rooting for America’s enemies during active hostilities. Critics labeled the remark “treasonous” and accused him of undermining U.S. troops and national security. Even some on the left struggled to defend such a tone-deaf response.
Faced with the backlash, Murphy quickly backpedaled. The very next day, he took to X to insist his one-word cheer was nothing more than sarcasm. He wrote: “Ok Twitter, I can’t believe I need to clarify this but obviously Trump’s bungled mismanagement of this war is not ‘awesome.’ As I have said a million times here, it’s a disaster and he should end the war immediately. My tweet was something called ‘sarcasm.’”
When confronted by a Fox News reporter in a Capitol hallway, Murphy doubled down on the excuse, complaining that “Twitter has become kind of a cesspool” and that he “probably should give up on sarcasm on Twitter” because “sarcasm is not something I guess that’s allowed on Twitter any longer.”
This is the same tired playbook we’ve seen from radical Democrats for years: say something outrageous, get called out, then gaslight the public by claiming it was all a joke or “misinterpreted.” Meanwhile, the shadow fleet Murphy seemed so quick to praise is no laughing matter. These vessels have long been used by the Iranian regime to evade sanctions, generating billions in illicit revenue that flows directly to terror proxies who have spilled American blood.

Reports from the region, including statements from journalists on the ground, have pushed back hard against the Lloyd’s List claim, noting there is “no evidence” the vessels actually breached the blockade and labeling much of the narrative as Iranian propaganda. Yet Murphy’s instinctive reaction was not concern for U.S. service members or alarm over funding for terrorism — it was “awesome.”
This incident is bigger than one poorly worded tweet. It reveals a disturbing mindset among far-left Democrats like Murphy: an obsessive hatred of President Trump that blinds them to the real threats facing our nation. While brave American sailors and Marines work to contain a dangerous regime that chants “Death to America,” some in Washington seem more interested in scoring political points against the sitting president than in standing firmly with our troops and our country.
At a time when strong leadership is essential to protect American sovereignty and deter our adversaries, Murphy’s episode serves as a sobering reminder of how TDS can warp judgment — even among U.S. senators who took an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
Americans deserve leaders who put America First, support our military without hesitation, and refuse to give comfort to regimes that sponsor terror. Sarcasm or not, cheering — even ironically — for Iran’s shadow fleet dodging a U.S. blockade sends exactly the wrong message to our friends and foes alike.
