Virginia voters head to the polls today, April 21, 2026, for a special election that could fundamentally alter the balance of power in Congress. On the ballot is a constitutional amendment pushed by Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly. Framed as a temporary fix to “restore fairness,” this measure would allow politicians in Richmond to bypass Virginia’s independent redistricting commission and impose a new congressional map for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections.

Conservatives across the Commonwealth see this for what it is: a blatant power grab by Democrats desperate to rig the system in their favor, at the direct expense of democratic principles, fair representation, and the traditional values that built America.
Virginia’s current congressional districts reflect a competitive 6-5 Democratic edge, roughly mirroring the state’s closely divided electorate. Rural, faith-based, pro-family, and pro-America communities in the heartland have a voice alongside the heavily Democratic Northern Virginia suburbs. But the map Democrats have already drawn behind closed doors would dramatically shift that balance—potentially delivering 10 seats to Democrats and leaving Republicans with just one.
This isn’t redistricting. It’s gerrymandering on steroids, designed to dilute the influence of conservative Virginians who cherish limited government, the right to life, secure borders, and parental authority in education. By carving up rural districts and stretching them into deep-blue urban corridors, Democrats aim to silence pro-life voices, pro-Second Amendment families, and patriots who believe America remains the world’s last best hope for freedom.

The hypocrisy runs deep. In 2020, Virginia voters overwhelmingly approved a bipartisan redistricting commission precisely to take map-drawing power away from self-interested politicians. Republicans and Democrats alike celebrated it as a victory for fairness. Yet as soon as Democrats gained full control, they rushed to undo that reform—not through open debate or consensus, but by ramming through a partisan constitutional amendment and a pre-packaged map that overwhelmingly favors their party.
Governor Spanberger, who once campaigned against gerrymandering, signed the enabling legislation as one of her first acts. Former President Barack Obama and national Democrat figures have poured resources into urging a “yes” vote, claiming it’s necessary to counter Republican efforts in other states. But two wrongs don’t make a right. True conservatives reject mid-decade map manipulation regardless of which party attempts it. The Founders designed our system with checks and balances, including decennial census-based redistricting, to prevent exactly this kind of raw political opportunism.

President Trump has rightly called it a “blatant partisan power grab,” warning that it threatens the integrity of elections in a key swing state. Former Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares have crisscrossed Virginia sounding the alarm: this scheme would split rural communities, pack conservative voters into fewer districts, and entrench one-party dominance in Washington.
For pro-family, faith-based Virginians, the stakes could not be higher. A lopsided Democrat delegation would accelerate radical policies—unrestricted abortion, erosion of religious liberties, higher taxes on working families, and weakened national security. It would further marginalize the traditional values that define much of the Old Dominion outside the Beltway bubble.
Democrats defend the move as “temporary” and claim it merely responds to actions elsewhere. Yet the amendment suspends the independent commission they once championed, hands map-drawing back to the legislature they control, and locks in their advantage for three election cycles. If this passes, expect similar power plays in other blue states. This is the same “power at all costs” mindset seen in calls for court packing, D.C. statehood, and open borders amnesty—strategies aimed at reshaping the electorate and neutralizing constitutional safeguards.
Virginia families rooted in self-reliance, patriotism, and biblical principles deserve better. Our Republic thrives when every citizen’s voice matters, not when politicians engineer outcomes to guarantee victory. The amendment process itself demands broad consensus, not partisan maneuvering timed for midterms.
Patriots in the Commonwealth must reject this scheme at the ballot box. A strong “no” vote today sends a clear message: Virginia will not surrender fair elections to Democratic ambition. It reaffirms our commitment to the Constitution, equal representation, and the American ideal that government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed—not from rigged maps drawn in smoke-filled rooms.
The fight for limited government, secure borders, and the protection of innocent life continues. Virginians who hold these truths dear have one clear duty today: vote NO on the redistricting amendment and preserve the integrity of our democratic process.
