Las Vegas, NV- Once again, the Clark County School District finds itself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. On Thursday, 44-year-old substitute teacher Kimberly Ortega was arrested and jailed after an incident at West Preparatory Academy near Lake Mead Boulevard and North Martin Luther King Boulevard.
According to CCSD police, the matter stemmed from a verbal altercation where impairment may have played a role. Ortega now faces charges related to obstruction of an investigation. She was booked into the City of Las Vegas Detention Center Thursday evening and has already been removed from the district’s list of available substitute teachers. She is no longer eligible to work in any CCSD school. Ortega had only been with the district since October.

Parents across the valley have every right to be alarmed. Our children – our most precious responsibility – deserve safe classrooms staffed by responsible adults who uphold basic standards of conduct and professionalism. When substitutes are involved in altercations serious enough to trigger a police investigation, and then allegedly obstruct that very investigation, it raises serious questions about hiring practices, vetting processes, and the overall culture inside one of America’s largest school districts.
This latest arrest is not an isolated headline. Clark County families have watched a troubling pattern unfold: repeated incidents involving school personnel that undermine trust in the system charged with educating the next generation. Conservatives have long warned that when government-run monopolies like CCSD grow bloated and unaccountable, the focus shifts away from core academics, parental rights, and child safety toward bureaucracy and excuses.

True education reform starts with putting parents back in charge – through school choice, charter expansion, and transparent accountability that rewards excellence instead of shielding mediocrity. Faith-based and traditional families understand that raising strong, moral children requires environments rooted in discipline, respect, and personal responsibility – values too often sidelined in today’s public schools.

As we reflect this Good Friday on sacrifice, truth, and redemption, let us pray for the safety of every Nevada child and demand better from those entrusted with their care. Our children’s futures – and America’s future – depend on it. It’s time for real change in CCSD: smaller government influence in education, more parental empowerment, and zero tolerance for anything that puts kids at risk.
