Las Vegas, NV- In a story that underscores the importance of borders and accountability, Diana Butnarciuc, originally from Moldova, has been deported from Las Vegas following years of legal proceedings and a final removal order that dates back nearly a decade.
Butnarciuc entered the United States legally in 2008 and sought political asylum. That claim was denied in 2017, with all appeals exhausted by 2019, resulting in a formal order of removal. She had no criminal record and was married to Patrick Baja, a U.S. Marine veteran. The couple has two American-born children in Las Vegas. In 2020, Baja filed an I-130 petition to sponsor his wife for a green card, but the process remained pending.

On February 11, 2026, during what the family expected to be a routine USCIS interview in Las Vegas for permanent residency, ICE agents took Butnarciuc into custody at the Henderson Detention Center. Less than two months later, she was returned to Moldova, enforcing the long-standing deportation order.
This case highlights a fundamental conservative principle: the rule of law must apply equally to everyone. Immigration decisions are not made lightly; they follow years of due process, including asylum hearings, appeals, and opportunities for relief. When final orders are issued and then ignored for years, it erodes public trust in our immigration system and rewards those who remain in violation while others wait patiently in line.
Marine veterans like Patrick Baja deserve our deepest respect and gratitude for their service to this nation. Families naturally face hardship in these situations, and prayers go out to the Baja children and their father as they navigate this difficult season. However, marriage to a U.S. citizen or military service does not automatically override a prior final deportation order. Allowing unchecked exceptions would undermine the very system that protects American workers, families, and national security.

For too long, lax enforcement under previous administrations encouraged illegal presence and chain migration that strained resources in communities like Clark County. The current focus on removing individuals with active removal orders – even those without criminal convictions – sends a clear message: America welcomes legal immigrants who follow the rules, but we will no longer turn a blind eye to those who have exhausted every legal avenue and remain here unlawfully.
We must not loose sight that strong borders and orderly immigration protect the American family, our sovereignty, and the opportunities we want preserved for our children and future generations. True compassion includes upholding laws that prevent chaos at the border and ensure resources go first to citizens and legal residents.
Enforcing immigration law is not cruelty – it is justice. It honors those who came here the right way and defends the exceptional nation our veterans fought to protect.
