In a win for common sense, election integrity, and the will of the people, a Clark County district judge has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to disqualify North Las Vegas City Councilman Scott Black from the mayoral race. This politically motivated attack on a proven conservative leader has fallen flat, clearing the path for Black to continue his fight for safer streets, fiscal responsibility, and pro-family policies in one of Nevada’s fastest-growing cities.
District Judge Jacqueline Bluth ruled last week that Councilman Black remains fully eligible to run, rejecting claims that his potential service as mayor would violate Nevada’s 12-year term limits for local officials. Black, first elected to the Ward 3 City Council in 2017, has served with distinction and will not exceed the limit at the time of the election. The judge rightly focused on the plain language of the law, noting Black would only have served nine years by the relevant point.
Plaintiff Karin Rodriguez, backed by attorney Bradley Schrager, attempted to sidestep the voters by dragging the city, clerk, and registrar of voters into court. Their effort aimed to remove Black’s name from the ballot ahead of the June 9 primary. Schrager called the outcome “disappointing” and hinted at an appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court—yet another delay tactic that wastes taxpayer resources and distracts from real issues facing North Las Vegas families.
Black’s team fired back strongly. “This was a politically motivated attempt to circumvent the will of the voters,” Black stated through his campaign. His focus remains on building on the city’s positive momentum, backed by endorsements from police, firefighters, veterans, businesses, and working families who value his track record of results.
This case highlights a troubling pattern: activist lawsuits designed to disenfranchise conservative candidates and override the democratic process. Nevada conservatives understand that term limits serve an important check on power, but they must be applied fairly—not weaponized to eliminate strong leaders mid-fight. Scott Black’s service reflects the kind of steady, principled governance our communities need. He has helped guide North Las Vegas through challenges while prioritizing public safety, economic growth, and traditional values that strengthen families and neighborhoods.
Local races like this one matter deeply. Conservative voters in North Las Vegas have a clear choice: continue the turnaround with a proven fighter like Scott Black or risk handing the reins to those who favor bigger government and weaker enforcement of our laws.
