A federal grand jury in Las Vegas has handed down a stinging indictment against Leo Blundo, the chairman of the Nye County Republican Party and a former Nye County commissioner, charging him with five counts of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering tied to alleged COVID-19 relief fraud exceeding $500,000.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada, Blundo—owner and operator of Carmelo’s Bistro in Pahrump—submitted false applications between March 31, 2020, and September 6, 2021, for federal programs administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration. These included the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL), and Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF). Prosecutors allege he fraudulently inflated the restaurant’s gross revenue, average monthly payroll, and number of employees to qualify for larger loans and grants. He is also accused of submitting bogus supporting documents, such as falsified profit and loss statements and tax returns.

Blundo reportedly obtained two PPP loans, two EIDLs, and one RRF grant totaling more than $500,000. Instead of using the funds as intended—to keep employees on payroll and sustain the business during the pandemic—he allegedly diverted more than $200,000 to personal investment accounts and over $25,000 to a cryptocurrency account.
This isn’t Blundo’s first brush with scrutiny over COVID-related matters. In 2020, Nye County sheriff’s deputies arrested him amid accusations linked to his dual role as commissioner and business owner. The Nevada Attorney General’s Office later cleared him of those claims, though the Nevada Commission on Ethics imposed a $4,500 fine.
Blundo had no comment when contacted by reporters. His initial court appearance was scheduled for March 24, 2026, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Albregts. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of up to 120 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines up to $1.75 million.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Delzotto underscored the gravity: “Fraud will not be tolerated in our community—regardless of the position or identity of those involved. Fraud erodes public trust and undermines the institutions our communities rely on every day. The FBI remains committed to protecting the integrity of our public institutions and ensuring that no one is above the law.”
This case hits hard for conservatives who champion limited government, fiscal responsibility, and the rule of law. Emergency relief programs like those under the CARES Act were meant to help struggling small businesses and families weather an unprecedented crisis—not to line personal pockets through deception. When elected officials or party leaders are implicated in such schemes, it damages trust in leadership across the board and fuels cynicism about government spending.
Republicans hold themselves to high standards of accountability and integrity; anything less betrays the voters who entrust them with power. Blundo is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the legal process must unfold fairly. Yet the allegations demand transparency and swift justice to restore confidence.
The Nevada Conservative News will follow developments in this federal case closely, as it underscores the need for vigilance against waste, fraud, and abuse—especially when taxpayer dollars and public trust are on the line. America’s strength lies in upholding the Constitution and the principles of honest governance that make us the world’s last best hope.
